Women Can Business Tips – Hayley’s Top 5 Tips for Women in Business

Hayley SolichI have always been a strong supporter of the notion that women can do anything they put their hearts and minds to and this certainly extends to the business realm.  Once we learn to get ourselves out of the way, to put to one side our hang ups about our strengths and weaknesses and our right to be doing what we are doing, there is quite  a lot of room for success.

Here are my 5 tips for how to be a Women Can woman in business in 2012:

1. Have a plan.  Start with a great strategic vision of where you are headed and what you want to achieve.

2. Invite someone into your life that is headed in the same direction but is a few steps further ahead who can short cut your learning and validate your experiences.  I have found mentors invaluable in my own life and I remember my first mentor in business told me to take dolly steps.  The best advice I’ve ever had cause it means you avoids the big risks and the big disappointments.

3. Write your “why” down and keep it someone handy.  When you start to flag in your enthusiasm because the cash just isn’t flowing, drag out your “why” and encourage yourself that you began with a vision.

4. Join an empowered group of women who are supportive and not competitive and will help you to stay focused and full of enthusiasm for your journey.

5. Reward yourself when you hit milestones.  You have worked hard and you deserve some little rewards along the way.

Whatever you choose to do in business there is always going to be a cost.  For many women that relates directly back to time spent with the family.  Remember that you are not super woman, but you are an empowered woman.  Families often take mum’s for granted, so a little bit of a shift won’t kill them but may require some adjustments.  But if you have very small children, cut yourself some slack and keep your priorities in right order.  You are not going to ever have that time again and your children really should be a high priority.

I remember a very successful business woman, Gail Kelly, CEO of Westpac if I remember correctly, was asked how she managed to juggle her very demanding job with her role as a mother.  She responded, “I live in the moment.  If I am in the boardroom then I am in the boardroom and if I am at my son’s soccer match, I am at my son’s soccer match.  Whatever I am doing I live totally in that moment.”

Sounds like great advice to me.

And remember, you are valuable.  You have worth.  You deserve to be treated well, to receive a good remuneration for your time and efforts, so charge what you are worth if your business had to go and hire someone in to do what you are doing how much would it have to pay?  That’s what you are worth.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this subject and don’t forget to take some “in the moment me time” over Christmas. :)

Are you taking the time to see a bigger picture?

Busienss SuccessI am all about strategy because when we are strategic we shortcut the time required to reach our destination and we capitalise on our resources.  Call me practical…I can’t help it, I was born this way.

My thinking is that if there are two pathways to the same destination and one is direct and the other is the scenic view I’d rather take the direct route, unless I’m in the mood for a bit of a leisurely drive.

We are in business to make money.  We really don’t need scenic views, we need direct pathways. To make money we need to capitalise on our assets – ourselves, our time, our money.  Once we have seen the increase, then we can decide to take  a scenic route every once in a while.

So my challenge to all you other entrepreneurs out there is to take the time to get a bigger picture for 2012.  I already have mine and it is way exciting, but it didn’t come to me without a price.  I had to put in the time of seeking the right ideas and then the time of putting together the plan so that I can realise that bigger picture.

Some really struggle with seeing the bigger picture.  They get stuck in the rut of the everyday running of their business, like rats on a treadmill going round and round.  Isn’t it time to get off the treadmill and to take a long hard look at your business or your life and choose to make 2012 a spectacular year?  I know I will be.  Join me.

I am really looking forward to working with the small group of entrepreneurs that will be joining my Make It Happen Mentoring Program in 2012.  I already have had many enquiries and one of the six has been chosen.

If you’d like to know more about the program, visit my information page or drop me an email and I’ll send you through some information.   Make 2012 the best year ever.  Get clear on your vision.  Put together a plan.  And take MASSIVE action.

I look forward to hearing all about the wonderful things that you have planned.

3 Quick Tips To Keeping Inspired and Motivated

We are all born different, so what I am about to share may or may not work for you because there is not just one set of rules for all of humanity.

For me, motivation comes pretty easily.  I spring out of bed, happy to embrace the day and ready to take on a new challenge.  That’s my persona and probably 80% of the time it is no effort for me to get started on work.

However, it is that 20% of the time that I have to work harder at keeping up my motivation.  And this is where I have learned some simple keys that work for me and that I want to share with you.

ThinkingKey 1:  ”Work never killed you…it’s just the thought of it that did.”

I remember my mother used to say this to me as a young person.  She’d ask me to do something for her and I’d be dragging my feet and she’d just nail the problem…my stinking thinking.  Doing the dishes and washing clothes were always the killers.  It would take me a long time to get motivated but once I was there and got started I actually didn’t mind the work and there was a deep sense of satisfaction that came from seeing the kitchen shining and the clothes neatly folded and packed away in my drawers!

So our first battleground is in the mind.  Change the way we think about what it is that we need to do and it will become easier.

Working on LaptopKey 2:  Just do it – adopt a Nike attitude to life!

Sometimes tasks just niggle at you and niggle at you and like the unwanted food on your plate, they get pushed around the plate, moving aside to accommodate more interesting projects, but the truth is that the whole time those undone tasks are niggling away at your brain and causing you to worry and to be anxious because you know that your procrastination is going to catch up with you.

So in these moments when I can see that I am pushing a task around my desk but not actually getting on with it, I actually say out loud to myself, “Just do it, Hayley!”  And I deliberately (and I mean deliberately) make myself get started on it.  9 times out of 10 what I was worred about and the reason why I didn’t want to do it was because it was slightly complicated and I knew I’d have to use my brain to solve the problem. The truth is that when you actually get down to it, they are not as complicated as previously assumed and the end result is the job is done and off your conscience and you can’t put a price on the feeling of a clear conscience.

Team WorkKey 3:   Partner with others

I cannot stress enough how valuable it is to have other people that you can partner with to keep up your motivation in your business.  I have many people in my life that I work with that help me to keep motivated and on track and they really are invaluable.

So if you feel like something is a bit hard and you don’t really know where to start or just can’t get over that first hump, grab a business friend or business mentor and work on it together.  There is definitely strength in a group and a good support group can really not only help you to keep up your motivation but really propel you forward.  This was the whole motivation behind creating the Empowered Entrepreneur‘s group that I run on Facebook.  It’s a closed group that has 20 entrepreneurs who are committed to supporting each other and in doing that they are sharing information, providing online support and helping each other to keep motivated and inspired.  It really does work a treat.

So there are three keys to keeping up your motivation.  I’d love to hear your comments, so please post below and if you could share this article with your friends that will help them also.

I also offer business mentoring services if you feel like you need someone to be accountable with and to get inspired by.  Just fill in my email opt-in on the home page to make the most of a free 30 minute introductory consultation with me.

Interview Style Presentation for BPW Fremantle with Kath Mazzella

Having never been to a BPW meeting prior, it was quite eye opening to visit the Fremantle branch of BPW in support of Kath Mazzella so that we could present her story in interview style.

For those who don’t know, Kath is a Gynae Cancer survivor and advocate for women’s health with a growing momentum of support from around the globe for her cause.

It was quite fortuituous that the State President and National President were both in attendance and we got a snapshot of how BPW are representing women on both national and international committees where the profile of women is concerned. I was quite impressed with their goals and objectives and also with the joy I saw amongst the women in the group.

So here are some pics from the night for you to enjoy.

Supporting Gynae Awareness in Perth

I had the privilege of being invited as a guest at the International Gynae Awareness Day event in Perth, Western Australia. I have been a long time sponsor of the day, giving my time to work with Kath Mazzella to help her forward the cause and you may have seen the videos I did in helping to promote the message further.

It was a roaring success, so I thought I’d share just a couple of quick pics from the day…

Hayley’s Definition of Strategic Thinking

Strategy ImageWhen I think about the word “strategic” it immediately conjures up in my mind the days when I used to play Battleship.  After a few times playing that game I became aware of the need for strategy so that I could win.  In fact, most board games require strategy and for some this can be quite challenging.

I also think of the days when I used to play hockey, netball and basketball.  There were different strategies that needed to be employed for different games because different sets of rules came into play.  If I tried to play the same strategies in each game then I was doomed from the onset.  I had to change my strategy to suit the game I was playing and when I first started playing all these games I was clueless.

Today when I think about strategy and being strategic, I immediately start to position myself above the situation and to think about all the pieces that need to be put in place for me (or whoever I am being strategic for) to be able to reach the end point or to progress towards that end point.

Dr Stephen Covey says, “Begin with the end in mind.”

Strategic thinking in my view is the ability to see the bigger picture and to be able to break that down into manageable pieces to be able to achieve the bigger picture.

Now surprisingly to me, for I was born with a strategic thinking mind, this is not always easy for some people to do.  Some people become so entrapped in the day-to-day grind of making things happen, that they never have the opportunity for that higher level thinking.

A classic example of this was a friend’s business that I worked with quite a few years ago.  I was hired to come in as an administrative assistant, but from the moment I set foot in his business, I could immediately see why he was not achieving the success I knew he really desired.  He had no time or space in his life for strategic thinking.  He was stuck working in the business, with no time to work on the business and was wondering why in 11 years of operation he had not been able to really break through in his business.  Not only that, he was clouding his message by having a display area that contained elements that had nothing to do with his core business.  He was an excellent salesperson, which was why he had been able to stay in business, but the long term strategic growth that he desired was never going to be able to happen because of his lack of strategic thinking. He had to change his thinking and fortunately, he was very open to my suggestions and essentially is the reason why I am doing what I do today.

As I started to ask him some questions about his business, for example, what were the best selling items and in what season did they sell, he just looked at me blankly.  He had no idea of what was working for him in the business and how many of us just go along and hope for the best?

So I see that there are a number of elements that comprise strategic thinking…

1.  The Top Down Picture

2.  Analysis and Feedback on Performance

3.  Measurable Goals and Action Plans

4.  Engagement on all levels

If we are truly serious about sustainability – be it in our personal or business life – then we must become more strategic in our thinking.  Without a bigger picture we have no vision to achieve and will never get the results that our hearts desire.

Please read next post about The Top Down Picture… and leave a comment and share with your friends.

Reflection: Cling to what is good

“In this life there will always be people who are sent to help you to grow…

Some you will love for it, for they are the fertiliser and the water that nourishes the soil and gives you sustenance. Others you will hate for it for those are the ones that prune you back, they are the rope that tethers you so you grow straight.  But at the end of the day, just so long as there are not too many who are weeds, those who want to choke the life out of you, you will flourish.  So I say be wise and recognise who are the weeds so you can get them out of the way early on.  Don’t resist the hand of the pruner or the tethering which is for your own benefit.  Cling to what is good.”

One step…two steps…three steps…closer to my dream!

When Danette Hibberd placed a copy of Finally at 40 Life Begins magazine in my hands in 2008, I was immediately drawn to the magazine. I simply loved the concept and it was so closely aligned to the magazine that I founded in Perth and had to walk away from that I felt a huge tug on my heart.

18 months later, I came into contact with the magazine again and this time, instead of ignoring the huge tug on my heart I decided to make a contact and see if they were looking for writers.

At this stage, I had just started a new business, so was very business with websites and design work, however, I wanted to keep my hand in the writing field.

Amanda Gelsi, the editor at the time was very encouraging and welcomed me with open arms, giving me three feature articles to write straight away.

Then when Amanda left after completing the Winter Edition, my connection moved to the Publishing Editor, Jenny Jacob. As Jenny and I shared our stories, we saw the parallels in what was my magazine and what is her magazine. We completely understood each other’s journey and a strong bond was forged.

So today, after two editions, I have been appointed Assistant Editor of national Australian magazine, Finally at 40 Life Begins and I am 90% through editing the Spring Edition. I have loved every second of every hour of effort I have applied. There is so much great information in the magazine and as I am forced to read all the content I am learning so much from the contributors.

I want to let you know that I believe there is a divine element to this connection. When I left Pearls Women’s Magazine in 2007, it was not because I didn’t want to do the magazine anymore, but rather, because it was not going to be financially viable for a few years and my family were putting pressure on me not to give my time and effort to it with so little return from it. So I see this new connection as God’s way of blessing me. On a week when I was in a lull in my business I stopped and stilled myself and asked the question, “What do I do God to get more money in?” The response came, “Sit still and wait.” By the end of the week, I had two new website projects and Jenny had called me to offer me the Assistant Editor’s role with the magazine. Now that is when you know you have made a divine connection and have heard correctly!

I look forward to seeing what the future brings…it’s a wonderful opportunity to showcase all those gorgeous girls that I know and love who have amazing life stories.
