Women Can Business Tips – Hayley’s Top 5 Tips for Women in Business

Hayley SolichI have always been a strong supporter of the notion that women can do anything they put their hearts and minds to and this certainly extends to the business realm.  Once we learn to get ourselves out of the way, to put to one side our hang ups about our strengths and weaknesses and our right to be doing what we are doing, there is quite  a lot of room for success.

Here are my 5 tips for how to be a Women Can woman in business in 2012:

1. Have a plan.  Start with a great strategic vision of where you are headed and what you want to achieve.

2. Invite someone into your life that is headed in the same direction but is a few steps further ahead who can short cut your learning and validate your experiences.  I have found mentors invaluable in my own life and I remember my first mentor in business told me to take dolly steps.  The best advice I’ve ever had cause it means you avoids the big risks and the big disappointments.

3. Write your “why” down and keep it someone handy.  When you start to flag in your enthusiasm because the cash just isn’t flowing, drag out your “why” and encourage yourself that you began with a vision.

4. Join an empowered group of women who are supportive and not competitive and will help you to stay focused and full of enthusiasm for your journey.

5. Reward yourself when you hit milestones.  You have worked hard and you deserve some little rewards along the way.

Whatever you choose to do in business there is always going to be a cost.  For many women that relates directly back to time spent with the family.  Remember that you are not super woman, but you are an empowered woman.  Families often take mum’s for granted, so a little bit of a shift won’t kill them but may require some adjustments.  But if you have very small children, cut yourself some slack and keep your priorities in right order.  You are not going to ever have that time again and your children really should be a high priority.

I remember a very successful business woman, Gail Kelly, CEO of Westpac if I remember correctly, was asked how she managed to juggle her very demanding job with her role as a mother.  She responded, “I live in the moment.  If I am in the boardroom then I am in the boardroom and if I am at my son’s soccer match, I am at my son’s soccer match.  Whatever I am doing I live totally in that moment.”

Sounds like great advice to me.

And remember, you are valuable.  You have worth.  You deserve to be treated well, to receive a good remuneration for your time and efforts, so charge what you are worth if your business had to go and hire someone in to do what you are doing how much would it have to pay?  That’s what you are worth.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this subject and don’t forget to take some “in the moment me time” over Christmas. :)

Are you taking the time to see a bigger picture?

Busienss SuccessI am all about strategy because when we are strategic we shortcut the time required to reach our destination and we capitalise on our resources.  Call me practical…I can’t help it, I was born this way.

My thinking is that if there are two pathways to the same destination and one is direct and the other is the scenic view I’d rather take the direct route, unless I’m in the mood for a bit of a leisurely drive.

We are in business to make money.  We really don’t need scenic views, we need direct pathways. To make money we need to capitalise on our assets – ourselves, our time, our money.  Once we have seen the increase, then we can decide to take  a scenic route every once in a while.

So my challenge to all you other entrepreneurs out there is to take the time to get a bigger picture for 2012.  I already have mine and it is way exciting, but it didn’t come to me without a price.  I had to put in the time of seeking the right ideas and then the time of putting together the plan so that I can realise that bigger picture.

Some really struggle with seeing the bigger picture.  They get stuck in the rut of the everyday running of their business, like rats on a treadmill going round and round.  Isn’t it time to get off the treadmill and to take a long hard look at your business or your life and choose to make 2012 a spectacular year?  I know I will be.  Join me.

I am really looking forward to working with the small group of entrepreneurs that will be joining my Make It Happen Mentoring Program in 2012.  I already have had many enquiries and one of the six has been chosen.

If you’d like to know more about the program, visit my information page or drop me an email and I’ll send you through some information.   Make 2012 the best year ever.  Get clear on your vision.  Put together a plan.  And take MASSIVE action.

I look forward to hearing all about the wonderful things that you have planned.

3 Quick Tips To Keeping Inspired and Motivated

We are all born different, so what I am about to share may or may not work for you because there is not just one set of rules for all of humanity.

For me, motivation comes pretty easily.  I spring out of bed, happy to embrace the day and ready to take on a new challenge.  That’s my persona and probably 80% of the time it is no effort for me to get started on work.

However, it is that 20% of the time that I have to work harder at keeping up my motivation.  And this is where I have learned some simple keys that work for me and that I want to share with you.

ThinkingKey 1:  ”Work never killed you…it’s just the thought of it that did.”

I remember my mother used to say this to me as a young person.  She’d ask me to do something for her and I’d be dragging my feet and she’d just nail the problem…my stinking thinking.  Doing the dishes and washing clothes were always the killers.  It would take me a long time to get motivated but once I was there and got started I actually didn’t mind the work and there was a deep sense of satisfaction that came from seeing the kitchen shining and the clothes neatly folded and packed away in my drawers!

So our first battleground is in the mind.  Change the way we think about what it is that we need to do and it will become easier.

Working on LaptopKey 2:  Just do it – adopt a Nike attitude to life!

Sometimes tasks just niggle at you and niggle at you and like the unwanted food on your plate, they get pushed around the plate, moving aside to accommodate more interesting projects, but the truth is that the whole time those undone tasks are niggling away at your brain and causing you to worry and to be anxious because you know that your procrastination is going to catch up with you.

So in these moments when I can see that I am pushing a task around my desk but not actually getting on with it, I actually say out loud to myself, “Just do it, Hayley!”  And I deliberately (and I mean deliberately) make myself get started on it.  9 times out of 10 what I was worred about and the reason why I didn’t want to do it was because it was slightly complicated and I knew I’d have to use my brain to solve the problem. The truth is that when you actually get down to it, they are not as complicated as previously assumed and the end result is the job is done and off your conscience and you can’t put a price on the feeling of a clear conscience.

Team WorkKey 3:   Partner with others

I cannot stress enough how valuable it is to have other people that you can partner with to keep up your motivation in your business.  I have many people in my life that I work with that help me to keep motivated and on track and they really are invaluable.

So if you feel like something is a bit hard and you don’t really know where to start or just can’t get over that first hump, grab a business friend or business mentor and work on it together.  There is definitely strength in a group and a good support group can really not only help you to keep up your motivation but really propel you forward.  This was the whole motivation behind creating the Empowered Entrepreneur‘s group that I run on Facebook.  It’s a closed group that has 20 entrepreneurs who are committed to supporting each other and in doing that they are sharing information, providing online support and helping each other to keep motivated and inspired.  It really does work a treat.

So there are three keys to keeping up your motivation.  I’d love to hear your comments, so please post below and if you could share this article with your friends that will help them also.

I also offer business mentoring services if you feel like you need someone to be accountable with and to get inspired by.  Just fill in my email opt-in on the home page to make the most of a free 30 minute introductory consultation with me.

Goal Setting

According to the Encarta online dictionary, goal means aim, something that somebody wants to achieve. The question is, how do you know what to aim for and how do you know when you have achieved it?  It is easy to have lots of ideas, but goals are the process by which you are able to focus those ideas to make them achievable.

Here are the main points why goal setting is a good idea:

1. Knowing where you are heading empowers you. If you can see the finish line, you know exactly how much effort is required for you to cross it and that is empowering.

2. Recording your goals also empowers you. By writing them down and giving them a timeframe to make them measurable, you go through the mental process of figuring out exactly what you are going to need to achieve them. Giving them a date to be achieved by helps to apply the pressure necessary to motivate you to action.

3. Visualising your goal in your mind, helps you to adopt the mental attitude necessary to achieve your goal. Imagine yourself doing whatever your goal is. The clearer you can see it in your mind, the more achievable it will become.

4. Talk positively about your goals and eliminate negative self-talk in relation to them. Every goal will have it’s issues but by being solutions focused, the issues will fade into the glory of achieving your goals.

5. Break your goals right down into achievable bite size chunks. The more detailed you are, the more probable your success will be.

6. Protect your goals from what are called the “dream stealers”.These are people that want to discourage you by pointing out all the obstacles and problems associated with your goal.

7. As you are working on your goals, adopt a “do-it-now” mentality. If something is annoying you, do something about it. Take action.

8. Make lists. If you rely on your brain, you will miss important things out. Buy a notepad you can carry everywhere with you and make lists of what you want to achieve, then tick them off as yougo.

9. Make new goals regularly. A goals list is a fluid document. It needs to be visited daily and updated as things come up.

10. No more excuses, take action now! You can only guarantee success if you start the journey.

Achieving your dreams

You now know what goals are and how you can set them and you have been given the keys to setting and making your own goals. But is there another process that is missing that ensures that you achieve your goals?

I would like to suggest that there is. You know what you want to achieve, you even have created a visual board for yourself where you have images of what you want to achieve, with all the description and dates of your goals. But what it is that takes the dream off the page and converts it to reality?

Here are my three factors for making it happen.

1. Belief—Do you believe that it can and will happen to you?

2. Faith—Do you have the faith to step out and test your vision to prove it’s worth?

3. Focus—Are you prepared to make your goal the focus of your life?

If you can firstly, believe in your dream; secondly, have faith in yourself and any spiritual power that you may believe in; and then thirdly, place your focus on attaining that dream, amazing things start to happen! Without these your dream will fail before it has even lived.

Don’t worry if you don’t know why!

In my life there have been many things that I have done, often at my own expense, that when questioned by others I have just had to say, “I don’t know why, I just know I need to do this.”

The beauty is that further along the pathway it becomes completely evident to me why I needed to do them as they were the stepping stones in the pathway that has led me to be the person that I am today, doing the things that I am doing.

What this has taught me is to value every experience, sucking the marrow out of life and being grateful for the many wonderful opportunities that have graced my life.

I just wanted to encourage you that sometimes what on the surface looks like it has nothing to offer you in the way of tangible benefits, yet you feel drawn to the opportunity, that it may have hidden treasure and that those around you may question you and you may not have an answer to give them immmediately.

If I stopped writing back when the first person questioned my ability or my use of my time I would never be feature writing for a national magazine now. And if I had questioned writing for that magazine for no payment immediately, I would never have gotten the opportunity to get my name known in the writing world. And if I had never started the Pearls Women’s Magazine project, I would never have gotten my foot in the door at the National Women’s Magazine. And if I’d listened to those that were questioning the value of giving my time to develop Pearls, all those people who read the magazine and their lives were changed in some positive way would never have happened.

Sometimes risks are essential if we want to find the hidden treasure.

I think you get my picture. You just never know when what you are doing has a positive spin off for others or for your own destiny, even if it is painful and a negative experience at the time.

There is a verse in the Bible that I love and brings me comfort. It says, “All things work together for the good…”

You may not understand which thread you are sewing with at this time in your life, but you are creating a rich tapestry and one day you will get to see it from the top side down, not just the underside up. Keep sewing!
