Testimonial from Kath Mazzella OAM

Hayley Solich is simply inspirational.  Over the past four years that we have been working together, she has been determined, visionary, committed to see things through and makes sure that any mission is accomplished.  By sharing her knowledge with others she has been able to see the growth in people and their businesses.

Hayley has unbelievable patience with people who can’t see their bigger vision and shines a light to help them get clarity.

As a public speaker, Hayley comes across as a very passionate woman and clear communicator, which impacts on anyone who listens to her.  I heard her speak at the Westpac Bank International Women’s Day event in Dianella and was not surprised when I learned that she had been invited to speak again the following year because I saw the tangible influence she had in inspiring others.

After attending Hayley’s presentation for her own business, I felt inspired to take her ideas and implement them into my own business which is now thriving.   I can’t thank Hayley enough for what she has done in showing me the way and for being willing to stand with me in promoting Gynae and Sexual Health Awareness in the community, despite it being a controversial topic for many.  Hayley has given me the tools, support and courage to forge ahead and pursue my cause.

Never to be forgotten, Hayley.

Supporting Gynae Awareness in Perth

I had the privilege of being invited as a guest at the International Gynae Awareness Day event in Perth, Western Australia. I have been a long time sponsor of the day, giving my time to work with Kath Mazzella to help her forward the cause and you may have seen the videos I did in helping to promote the message further.

It was a roaring success, so I thought I’d share just a couple of quick pics from the day…

How Do We Get The Top Down Picture?

VisionaryWe hear so much talk about the bigger picture or the higher view, but essentially it is all about getting on the same page with where you or your business want to be.  It is all about stepping outside of where you are and taking a peak into the future, then working your way backwards to where you are at present.

Teams often struggle to agree on what that bigger picture might be and sincerely, I think that if you want to build a successful bigger picture someone in the team has to take responsibility for drawing out of the team what that bigger picture looks like, because you will have a higher level of success if people are actively engaged in building the bigger picture that they have been a part of creating.  Autocratic leadership works well in the armed forces but not so well in the corporate world.  Strong leadership today is all about empowering people to take responsibility for building the future they want to see.

So how do we get that bigger picture?  What steps do we need to take to arrive at a validated conclusion?

I think this process must be a combination of two processes:

1. Logical reasoning (Head led endeavour)

2. Intuitive knowing (Heart led endeavour)

If we lead only with our head, our end result will be that we are ultimately disatisfied.

If we lead only with our heart, we may be satisfied on a heart level, but our end result will fall short of where we could get to if we can balance both.

If we can find a balance between the mechanical and the creative, we will have a wonderful bigger picture that is both visionary and achievable.

In a simplistic way, the first steps in this process are to map:

1.  Where you are.

2.  Where you want to be.

3.  What is required to get you from where you are to where you want to be.

In seeking to understand where you are, this is an opportunity for open and honest communication.  I run an Empowered Entrepreneurs group and each person in that group has had a day when the whole group focusses on them and their business.  They are asked to provide us with areas to focus our attention on and provide feedback.  As each person adds their feedback there is this flurry of activity with people giving their external viewpoint and we have seen tremendous growth in individual businesses through this process.  We have also seen our group become tightly knitted together and I think it is that we are developing that group bond because we feel we have contributed something to each other’s businesses.

We must never be afraid to ask for critical feedback because it strengthens and refines us.  It also helps to build that bigger view of what our present should or could look like.

In seeking to understand where you want to be, this is an opportunity for larger and more expansive thinking.  Removing the limitations, opening your heart and mind to possibilities, immediately brings to you the tools for creative, visionary process.  Putting onto paper that bigger vision will also help all members of your team to know where they are headed and this becomes like a lighthouse or guiding beacon.  The more detailed you are about where you want to be, the easier it will become to know what is required to get you from where you are to where you want to be.

I think about my own life.  I have had a vision to be an international motivational speaker since my early 20′s.  By age 30, I had achieved most of the skills that I required to be confident enough to step up onto a stage and deliver a message.  But then I realised that you can be a performing artist and have a standing ovation in front of 15,000 people but still not have the skills to present a dynamic message as a public speaker.  So with the bigger vision in mind, I began training and getting experience working in front of people in a teaching capacity as a workplace trainer and assessor.  This was my next step, and this is all about Step 3 in my process.  When you know where you want to be and you know where you are, then it becomes a lot esaier to identify what you need to do to get to your end result.

For me I needed to develop my reputation in the community – notoreity is important in a public speaking business and is one of the reasons why I became a radio announcer in 2009.  I needed to hone my teaching gift – the ability to pass on knowledge in a fluidy way is also highly important and is one of the reasons I became a lecturer at TAFE.  I needed to become comfortable in a speaking role – the ability to “own” the space is essential if you want people to believe and buy into your story and is one of the reasons why I became a community leader by starting Women Can International Inc.  I wanted to step up into the higher level of thinking and grow my capacity so that I could eventually achieve my end result.

Stop and think about your life…about your business…

Take a moment to ask yourself the 3-step process…

1.  Where am I now?

2.  Where do I want to be?

3.  What do I need to get to where I want to be?

Once you have mastered this, every decision becomes easy to make in your business or personal life and requires only that you ask one question – “Is it going to help me get to where I want to be?”

I’d love to hear your thoughts about this, so please post a comment or share with your friends.

Hayley’s Definition of Strategic Thinking

Strategy ImageWhen I think about the word “strategic” it immediately conjures up in my mind the days when I used to play Battleship.  After a few times playing that game I became aware of the need for strategy so that I could win.  In fact, most board games require strategy and for some this can be quite challenging.

I also think of the days when I used to play hockey, netball and basketball.  There were different strategies that needed to be employed for different games because different sets of rules came into play.  If I tried to play the same strategies in each game then I was doomed from the onset.  I had to change my strategy to suit the game I was playing and when I first started playing all these games I was clueless.

Today when I think about strategy and being strategic, I immediately start to position myself above the situation and to think about all the pieces that need to be put in place for me (or whoever I am being strategic for) to be able to reach the end point or to progress towards that end point.

Dr Stephen Covey says, “Begin with the end in mind.”

Strategic thinking in my view is the ability to see the bigger picture and to be able to break that down into manageable pieces to be able to achieve the bigger picture.

Now surprisingly to me, for I was born with a strategic thinking mind, this is not always easy for some people to do.  Some people become so entrapped in the day-to-day grind of making things happen, that they never have the opportunity for that higher level thinking.

A classic example of this was a friend’s business that I worked with quite a few years ago.  I was hired to come in as an administrative assistant, but from the moment I set foot in his business, I could immediately see why he was not achieving the success I knew he really desired.  He had no time or space in his life for strategic thinking.  He was stuck working in the business, with no time to work on the business and was wondering why in 11 years of operation he had not been able to really break through in his business.  Not only that, he was clouding his message by having a display area that contained elements that had nothing to do with his core business.  He was an excellent salesperson, which was why he had been able to stay in business, but the long term strategic growth that he desired was never going to be able to happen because of his lack of strategic thinking. He had to change his thinking and fortunately, he was very open to my suggestions and essentially is the reason why I am doing what I do today.

As I started to ask him some questions about his business, for example, what were the best selling items and in what season did they sell, he just looked at me blankly.  He had no idea of what was working for him in the business and how many of us just go along and hope for the best?

So I see that there are a number of elements that comprise strategic thinking…

1.  The Top Down Picture

2.  Analysis and Feedback on Performance

3.  Measurable Goals and Action Plans

4.  Engagement on all levels

If we are truly serious about sustainability – be it in our personal or business life – then we must become more strategic in our thinking.  Without a bigger picture we have no vision to achieve and will never get the results that our hearts desire.

Intercession by Hayley Solich

Intercession

Common Ground

When you are young, life is simple

You know everything
You are willing to try it all
And rules were made to be broken

But as you get older, life is more complex
You realise how little you know
You are less willing to try new things
And rules take on real meaning because they keep you safe

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a middle road
Where risk taking was okay
But rules were respected
And knowledge simply shared and valued

Reflection: Cling to what is good

“In this life there will always be people who are sent to help you to grow…

Some you will love for it, for they are the fertiliser and the water that nourishes the soil and gives you sustenance. Others you will hate for it for those are the ones that prune you back, they are the rope that tethers you so you grow straight.  But at the end of the day, just so long as there are not too many who are weeds, those who want to choke the life out of you, you will flourish.  So I say be wise and recognise who are the weeds so you can get them out of the way early on.  Don’t resist the hand of the pruner or the tethering which is for your own benefit.  Cling to what is good.”

A Whisper of Love by Hayley Solich

A whisper of love passed my heart today
Was the memory of my precious one
I wanted to wrap it around me
To keep it forever

But the whisper could not be held nor contained
As I was left behind
Gasping from the pain of it’s passing
I felt my heart would break again
Into a million little peices

How long will I feel this never ending ache
This drawing of my insides out
Is this my damnation?
To always remember the essence of them near
But be denied the reality?

In faith I draw love to me
It’s sweet balm surrounds my heart
It’s precious misty dew falls, like the tears on my cheeks
And I again become soaked, renewed
And able to bear this lifetime of longing
Wrap me in the Father’s warm embrace
Let me feel His touch upon my face
For with him holding me near
I can face this void of loss and pain that wants to possess me

Life is a Mystery by Hayley Solich

A reflection on the cycle of life…

We take our first steps, aided

Our tiny fingers curled in the palm of a larger guiding hand

We are fearless in our quest for indepence and they are the centre of our world

As we enter our primary years

We become less comfortable with the hand holding

Eager to find our own way of doing things we keep them around for our moments of fear

Then we enter our higher school years

We wouldn’t dream of holding the hand of those who have lovingly guided us

We demand to do things our own way, pushing them to the side, but occasionally seeking their guidance

Then after we have tasted indepence and found a mate, the birth of our own children causes us to hold their hand again, then for us to hold another’s

After squeezing the life out of our parent’s in childbirth, our large hands are now curling around the palm of our own little one

And we are encouraging them to gain their indepence

And so the process revolves until we are old

And if we are lucky, our frail wrinkly hand is now grasping the smooth, strong, young hand of our grandchild

And we must learn again how to be happy to be dependent

Winning, Losing and Choosing

In life there are the natural winners, the natural losers and then there are the choosers…those who choose to overcome their limitations and move from loser to winner, regardless of how they may seem to be losing at the moment, and then those who choose to lose regardless of how they could easily be winning…

Which are you today?

A winner – by chance, you were made that way, or by choice, you choose to win; or a loser by chance, you just simply can’t; or are you a choose-to-lose person?  Because regardless of how you think you can’t, you always have the opportunity to choose to change the way you think.
